Like many of you, I am saddened by the actions of our Supreme Court to unilaterally amend our constitution. Article XV, Section 1 makes perfectly clear that “the People of the Cherokee Nation reserve to themselves the power to propose laws and amendments” to the Constitution and “to enact or reject the same at the polls.”
Our government has three independent and separate branches, each with specific responsibilities and built-in checks and balances. When our judicial branch is forced to do the work of our legislative branch - we cannot expect to be happy with the outcome.
As your Tribal Councilor, I will tackle our Nation's legislative issues with timeliness and fortitude, and do my level best to ensure our government operates as intended.
